The Blue Shore Writers Retreat
May 31 to June 6, 2026
Isle of Lewis, Scotland
The view on arrival is sea, stone, and sky—strandlines, ancient mountains, the historic Uig Lodge
Â
Surfaces shimmer in pure Hebridean light. Wind traveled heather threads the air. Take your sweet time to settle in, then wander afield to find the poems, a waterfall, or a secret pool.
Â
An oystercatcher’s call signals an evening of candlelight and camaraderie. Dinner is served at a long table—meet us there. We promise laughter, friendship, and delicious food.
Â
Our days begin softly, with quiet time to read and write, followed by guided workshops, animal encounters, and opportunities to wander off wherever you like.
Â
Of course we'll also introduce you to some of our favorite local points of interest: each one a marvel. Allow us to surprise you with what we've planned!
Â
By week's end, you'll have written and read, laughed and feasted and celebrated with us. You'll have gasped at the beauty of this place, over and over. You'll leave having been change—a little or a lot—by all of it.

A Day at The Blue Shore
While we want to protect some of the magic of this gathering by not revealing every detail, here's a sketch of how a single day might unfold:
Sunrise: 4:31 am. The light—truly— is like nowhere else in the world. Try to experience its arrival at least once during the week.
Coffee and tea will be available for quiet, self-guided mornings. Silent reading and writing often begin in the Poetry Room, where long views of mountains and the sea become the first poems of the day.
Quiet time lasts until 10 am, with the exception of the dining room, for those who rise early and prefer companionable conversation.
Breakfast is homemade and generous; join us anytime between 8 and 9.
At 10 am, we gather for our writing workshop. We’ll begin with intention, a sense of possibility, and a selection of our favorite Scottish poems. Our packets—carefully curated to reflect our passion and personal connection to the literature of this part of the world—will spark and expand your imagination. Sessions weave together craft, the poetics of place, and support for larger projects; some will also include opportunities for thoughtful feedback.
Lunch is for sharing bird sightings,  poetic throughlines, and plans for the afternoon.
Afterward comes Open Space—time for writing, reading, resting, a soaking bath in "The Queen's Tub", or wandering the land. Some will stroll to the local shop, play tennis on the lawn, hike to the distillery, or visit the gallery up the road. Heather may guide an outing to the Callanish Standing Stones. Don’t be surprised if you feel something ancient stirring. Or walk with Holly to the waterfall, past a stone bothy and perhaps a grazing deer or wee sea trout frolicking in a pool. We’ll return in time for Afternoon Tea, naps, or writing in your room.Â
Happy Hour follows—a casual gathering offering refreshment, conversation, and amusement.
And then: Dinner—always an occasion.
Later in the evening, we’ll enjoy an offering from a local artist or musician, or a poetry reading. Bring your notebook. Sink into the most comfortable couches on the island.
Quiet Hours begin after that.
Sunset: 10:20 pm.
Moonrise: The waning flower moon will rise around  midnight.
Sweet, restorative sleep follows.
Travel companions join us for everything except the writing workshops.Â
